NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A 38-year-old Franklin Township business owner was arrested and charged with “sex crimes” in Edison and in New Brunswick, as well as for “computer theft,” according to a press release issued on September 16.

Thomas Canales was arrested at his South Lawrence Avenue home in the Somerset section of Franklin Township on September 1.

Canales was arrested on charges stemming from at least three separate incidents, including sexually assaulting and endangering the welfare of a child and lewdness when he exposed allegedly himself to a 7 year-old girl in New Brunswick on July 3.

He owns a security based company “Scope It Out” in Somerset, according to authorities, who also charged him in connection with his work installing a surveillance system at a private residence.

The charge of “computer theft” came after he installed a surveillance system in a customer’s home, and then monitored the residence from his computer and mobile phone.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) press release was obtained by New Brunswick Today despite all of our reporters being removed from the agency’s press list in February.

The release did not state where the home was, or when the spying occurred.

An investigation done by Detective Bill Coleman of the New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD), Detective Dominick DeCarlo of the Edison Police Department (EPD), and an MCPO Detective, also revealed that Canales had “improperly” touched a 32-year-old woman at a playground in Edison.

The Edison incident allegedly occurred on August 25, but charges weren’t filed until September 8, one week after he was arrested.

Canales is being held at the Middlesex County Jail in North Brunswick on $250,000 bail, according to the jail’s records department.  Prosecutors reported it was $300,000.

The jail’s records department indicated that $200,000 of that was the result of the charges for the New Brunswick incident involving the 7-year-old, and that at least for that portion of the bail, anyone who wants to bail out Canales would need to provide documentation of the source of the money before he can be released.

Both a criminal sexual contact charge from the Edison incident with the 32-year-old woman, and the “computer-related crimes” charges added an addition 25,000 each to the bail.

Authorities ask anyone with information to call Detective Coleman of the NBPD at (732) 745-5200 or Detective DeCarlo of the EPD at (732) 248-7400, or Detective Gregory Morris at the MCPO at (732) 745-3300, as this is still an active investigation.
