NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—City police are investigating what residents believe to be a stabbing near Bergen Court, in one of the city’s public housing projects on July 26.

According to the New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD), a 28-year-old man from Bound Brook “sustained non-life threatening injury to his lower back from a cutting instrument” at about 3:27pm.

Police said that the victim was transported from the Schwartz-Robeson public housing complex to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.

The NBPD made no effort to publicize the incident.  Unlike crimes that occur in the neighborhoods near Rutgers University, crimes near the city’s largest public housing neighborhood often go without public notification.

The projects are managed by the embattled New Brunswick Housing Authority (NBHA), which was recently caught overcharging tenants in questionable scheme involving parking fines.

New Brunswick Today learned of the violent incident from residents and asked police for information under the Open Public Records Act (OPRA).

“The incident occurred in the area of [Bergen] Court, New Brunswick,” confirmed Lt. Amish Shah, filling in for the department’s usual spokesperson.  “The investigation is on-going. No arrests have been made. “
