NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A man was struck by a sport utility vehicle in front of an apartment building located on Suydam Street near Railroad Avenue just after midnight on Sunday, June 26.
The driver remained on the scene, but only after witnesses took his keys away from him, and told him to stay there after he attempted to leave, according to a nearby resident who witnessed the crash.
The driver of the SUV was then let go after undergoing a field sobriety test administered by city police officers.
“No arrests or charges have resulted at this time,” said New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) Captain JT Miller.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital in an ambulance, and sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to Miller.
It was a busy night for local police officers patrolling the neighborhood.
Just three hours earlier, NBPD officers responded to a crash involving four vehicles roughly eight blocks away.
Officers determined that a drunk driver had struck three vehicle near the interesection of Lee Avenue and Hale Street.
The driver behind the wheel was identified as Edward Cruz, a 22-year-old resident from New Brunswick.
Cruz was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, DWI In a School Zone, and reckless driving, according to Miller. No one was injured on that incident.
The crash reports filed by NBPD were not immediately available, but the department did start posting them on their website as of May 1.
