EDISON, NJ–Middlesex County’s “Plays in the Park” is excited to announce that they are presenting “Sister Act,” for your enjoyment this summer. It is a feel good musical about a disco diva who is put into protective custody at a nun’s covent.

It’s the second show of the three play series offered by the Plays-in-the-Park this summer, which is based on the 1992 comedy featuring Whoopi Goldberg. The play runs from July 6 through July 16, with the exception of July 1o. All performances will commence at 8:30 pm.

Those interested in attending are welcome to come along and bring their families and friends to enjoy the show at the Stephen J. Capestro Theater, located in Roosevelt Park, just one block south of Menlo Park Mall in Edison.

Tickets may only be purchased during the nights of each showing. The Box Office opens promptly at 5:30 pm and closes at 9 pm, on the evenings of performances.

The costs of tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors (60+). Children 12 and under, as well as military personnel and  their families are admitted for free.

There will be a select number of reserved free seats for active military service men and women, along with their families available for each performance.  Service members or patrons who require assistance due to disability are asked to call the Parks Office at (732) 745-3936, prior to the show they wish to attend.

Audience members must provide their own seating. All chair backs must not exceed a height of 40 inches.

An Open Captioned performance is offered July 11 (rain date: July 12). A sign language interpreted performance is scheduled to occur on July 13 (rain date: July 14).

Attendees are welcome to purchase snacks and refreshments sold during each performance. They may also provide their own food and beverages and enjoy their meals from any of the provided picnic tables prior to the show, or inside the amphitheater during the performance.

In the case of a performance cancellation due to inclement weather, patrons may save their tickes for another performance in the series. Tickets are valid up to one year after the canceled performance.

This production of Sister Act is directed by Peter Loewy and choreographed by Rassean Holloway. The musical director is Nick DeGregorio.

Plays-in-the-Park (PIP) represents a unique collaboration between community theater and county government since 1963.  The program’s mission is to recreate the quality and intent of the original Broadway production of shows., and it is sponsored by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation.

“Sister Act is another fun offering that captures the spirit and style of the Broadway production,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a press release from the county government.

Freeholder Charles E. Tomaro, who hails from Edison, said the program “has been a County tradition for over 50 years.”

“I know Sister Act will add to PIP’s legacy of introducing new audiences to live theater and music,” said Tomaro.  “I wish the best for the cast, orchestra, and production crew and know their hard work will produce a truly outstanding experience.”

After the production of Sister Act comes to a close on July 16, the county invites community members to attend Rodger & Hammerstein’s “South Pacific,” showing from July 27-August 6.

There will be a select number of free performances for military veterans.

The musical tells a classic tale about an American nurse stationed on South Pacific who falls in love with a plantation owner.
