Two Newark Residents Plead Guilty to Fatal Shooting of Baltimore Man in Carteret

CARTERET, NJ–Two men pleaded guilty to charges related to the shooting death of a Maryland resident that took place in Carteret in 2013, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Daniel Gillens, a 24-year-old Newark resident, pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated manslaughter, admitting he shot and killed 26-year-old Deonte J. Shackleford while he was in New Jersey visiting relatives on April 5, 2013, according to the prosecutor's statement.

Gillens was sentenced to 25 years in state prison as part of the plea bargain.

NBPA Hopes to Begin Destroying Ferren Parking Deck This Summer

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—It's hard to miss the Ferren Mall and Parking Garage, the largest vacant structure in all of downtown New Brunswick.

The first half of the massive New Brunswick Parking Authority (NBPA) project opened in the 1970's, and an adjoining portion, which included the "mall," opened in 1982.

Now abandoned and contaminated, the site contains more than 1,200 empty parking spaces and about a dozen vacant storefronts and office spaces.

ODASIS Works to Help Disadvantaged Students Succeed in Sciences

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Rutgers Office for Diversity and Scholarship in the Sciences (ODASIS) began thirty years ago through the efforts of Dr. Francine Essien, a Black Rutgers biology professor.

She worked six or seven days a week, called students over winter break to encourage them, and was often the "anonymous donor" whose donations came in when money for books and stipends dwindled.

Woodbridge Cops Get Indicted For Alleged Cover-up of Crash

WOODBRIDGE, NJ—On May 6, a grand jury sitting in New Brunswick indicted three officers in the Woodbridge Police Department for covering up the truth about a one-car crash caused by Officer Brian Joseph, one of the three to be indicted.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, two officers unsuccessfully tried to cover up the crash by "failing to file a report and changing computer records that had documented the crash."

Tumulty’s Pub May Close as Owners Look to Sell The Place

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A legendary Hub City establishment may be closing this summer, as the management of Tumulty's Pub prepares to sell the place to new owners outside of the family for the first time in history.

Located at 361 George Street, the pub is one of the oldest businesses in the city, having been a longstanding fixture in downtown New Brunswick for more than 80 years.
