Crime Alert: Man Assaulted With Sharp Object Near Downtown

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–City police are investigating an attempted armed robbery where a Rutgers man was injured just outside of downtown New Brunswick, according to a university crime alert.

According to the alert, the victim was attacked at about 9:40pm on February 10 near the intersection of Neilsen Street and Morris Street, near the New Brunswick Apartments and the Riverside public housing neighborhood.

"In this incident the victim, who is affiliated with Rutgers University, reported that he was walking on Nielsen Street when he was approached by a male who assaulted him with a sharp object," reads the alert issued within three hours of the incident.

"The victim fell to the ground and the perpetrator then checked his pockets for items of value," it continues.  "The perpetrator fled towards Tabernacle Street after failing to take anything of value from the victim."

According to police, the victim sustained "superficial injuries" and "sought treatment at a local area hospital."

As for the suspect: "A description is limited at this time."

The New Brunswick Police Department is actively investigating this incident and asks that anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, contact their Detective Bureau at 732-745-5217.
