Crime Alert: Juvenile Taken Into Custody After Violent Robbery on Cook Campus

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ–The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) is investigating an on-campus assault and  robbery that took place at about 6:15pm on January 27, according to a crime alert issued four hours later.

The incident involved a Rutgers-affiliated victim and four juvenile suspects according to the alert.  It occurred near the intersection of College Farm Road and Ag Extension Way, near the intersection with Route 1.

"In this incident the victim, who is affiliated, reported being approached by four male juveniles who demanded his cell phone and then struck him and forced him to the ground," reads the alert.

"They then took his cell phone and fled in an unknown direction. No weapons were reported to have been observed or used during the commission of the robbery."

Accoring to the RUPD daily crime and fire log, the report was filed under incident #16-08804 and it is still listed as "Open/Pending" as of January 28.

According to the alert, one of the four suspects was "taken into custody."  Juveniles are not "arrested," they are "taken into custody." 

"One juvenile suspect was located and taken into custody by RUPD officers shortly after the incident was reported," reads the alert.  "The victim sustained minor injuries and declined medical assistance."

The alert said that descriptions of the perpetrators are limited at this time.

The Rutgers Police Department is actively investigating the incident and asks anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, contact their Detective Bureau at 848-932-8025.
