Mount Carmel Parish Gets Approval to Add Second Floor to Church

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A humble church located between New and Morris Streets may soon be standing a little taller after the city approved its plans for an expansion on September 28.

The little church  is sandwiched between Rockoff Hall, the city's first downtown dormitory, and a pair of abandoned buildings slated for demolition.

A 22-story residential highrise is planned for that site, as we reported in 2014.

Crime Alert: Man Shot Twice on Harvey Street Near Hub Liquors

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Violent crimes continue to plague the Hub City this holiday season, as man was shot twice in the lower leg on Harvey Street near French Street, at about 12:15am on December 26.

The victim ran in the side door of Hub Liquors, a bar that more closely resembles a liquor store, leaving a trail of blood and forcing the establishment to close early.

The unknown victim was hospitalized but is expected to fully recover from his injuries, according to a crime alert.

Teacher’s Life Saved by Staff at Paul Robeson School

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—What more can a child hope for than for guardians who act on their instinct to protect and to help others?

As a result of some swift heroics and teamwork by six faculty members at the Paul Robeson School, their colleague is still alive and undeniably grateful after suffering a nearly fatal seizure on the morning of November 9.

While one staff member hurried to call 911, another performed CPR and two others administered shocks with an AED machine after their coworker became unresponsive.

Police Radio: Fourth Ward Stabbing an Ominous Start to High-Crime Holiday in Hub City

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A man was stabbed in the abdomen at 317 Seaman Street in the first of many serious crimes on Christmas Day.

"I got a call… Female saying that someone just stabbed her boyfriend," reported a dispatcher over the police radio, sending city police to the scene at about 1:10am on December 25.

Shortly thereafter police were calling for an ambulance, reporting the victim had been stabbed in the abdomen.

Rutgers Suffers Another Cyberattack

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers suffered its sixth DDOS attack on the morning of December 24, according to officials from the school's Office of Information Technology.

The attack was targeted primarily against Sakai, an online learning tool which students and professors use to submit assignments, post lectures and class material, take exams and quizzes, and interact with students and professors outside of the classroom.

Four NBHS Coaches Named Coach of The Year, 20 Students Earn All-Division or All-Conference Honors

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—With the recent struggles to find a new athletic director for Rutgers University, perhaps the university should have been looking to New Brunswick High School's very own Rob Thomas, as four NBHS coaches were recognized as "coach of the year" in their respective sports.

“New Brunswick has a dedicated coaching staff that recognizes the importance of excelling both on and off the field,” says Jorge E. Diaz, New Brunswick High School principal.
