NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) has announced today that three men have been indicted by a grand jury on charges of fatally shooting a New Brunswick man and wounding two others in May 2014.

According to a press release from the MCPO, 24-year-old Rolando Martinez Sanchez, 23-year-old Manuel Mendez, and 30-year-old Renee Herrera, all from New Brunswick, were indicted on October 27 in connection with the murder of 28-year-old Gregorio Hernandez.

Prosecutors determined that Sanchez had opened fire on a group of men on Hale Street in New Brunswick on May 18, 2014, striking Hernandez, who was not one of the intended targets.

Hernandez was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m.

The two other men, who were sitting with Hernandez on the porch at 177 Hale Street, were wounded during the shooting.

One man was treated and released from the hospital. The other man suffered a wound to his finger, but declined treatment, said the MCPO.

The MCPO release said that the defendants also were charged in a 23-count indictment with aggravated manslaughter, manslaughter, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of a firearm for unlawful purposes.

In addition, Sanchez and Mendez were charged with hindering their apprehension, witness tampering, and obstruction of the administration of law.

The indictment was handed up in New Brunswick following a presentation to the grand jury by Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Brian Shevlin.

The MCPO credited Detective Drew Weiss of the New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) and MCPO Detective Gregory Morris in the case, adding that they had assistance from members of the Newark office of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Sanchez remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail set when he was first charged on December 18, 2014.  The other two menn were taken into custody following the indictment.

Bail also was set at $1 million for Herrera, who was arrested in Edison.  Mendez is being held on $750,000 bail after he surrendered to police the same day.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Weiss of the NBPD at (732) 745-5217, or Detective Morris of the MCPO at (732) 745-4054.
