NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—At least one person was injured in a shooting at the New Brunswick Apartments and quickly taken to a hospital in a private vehicle, while police began investigating the incident.
The complex has been a crime hotspot in recent years, and October 5 was no different, as three or four shots reportedly rang out at around 9:30pm, according to police radio transmissions.
“Police responded to a reported shooting in the area of 33 Commercial Avenue,” confirmed Captain JT Miller, a spokesperson for New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD).
“An individual walked into [Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital] a short time after with a non-life threatening gun shot wound,” Miller added. “Detectives are actively investigating this case. Identities of the victim/suspect are being withheld because of possible charges to follow.”
NBPD continues to investigate the shooting, which occurred in the vicinity of building #1 of the garden aparment complex, located at 33 Commercial Avenue in the First Ward.
The 206-unit apartment complex is owned by a limited liability company based in North Quincy, Massachusetts. Â It is located across the street from the Rutgers University Police Department’s headquarters.
According to NBPD radio transmissions, the victim was actually transported to the hospital in a dark-colored Honda.
The armed suspect was described as a man wearing a hoodie who fled towards Neilsen Street, according to police radio.
The next day police were summoned to the complex after additional “bullet casings” were found near building #1.
