Prosecutor Charges Five Rutgers Football Players with Violent Crimes

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Authorities arrested five current members of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team just two days before the first game of the season.

In total, nine people were arrested and a tenth suspect remains at large, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office (MCPO).

However, the MCPO statement said that only four of the suspects were "Rutgers students" and did not mention that any were student-athletes.

New Brunswick 2015-2016 School District Academic Calendar

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The new school year for New Brunswick students is set to begin on September 3, and the district's 2015-2016 schedule plans for all schools to be open for 180 days, in accordance with state law.

The schedule includes a nine days off for the winter holiday season, and an eight-day long Spring Break, as well as days off for Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veteran's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and two Jewish holidays.

New Brunswick Teacher Suspended After Being Late to Work More Than 100 Times in Two Years

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Arnold Anderson, a teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School, was reported late 46 times during the 2013-2014 school year and 65 times in the previous school year by the school's principal.

According to the charge against him, he was late by five minutes or more on sixteen occasions.

The city school district pressed for Anderson's termination from Roosevelt Elementary School as a result of continuous tardiness, but Anderson argued that the school's principal was out to get him.

City Resident Accused of Murdering College Student in 2014 Pleads Guilty in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash From 2012

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A 40-year-old New Brunswick landlord pleaded guilty in the deadly hit-and-run of a bicyclist that took place more than three years ago, but still faces charges of murdering a young man in 2014.

Timothy Puskas pleaded guilty on August 31 to a count of second-degree vehicular homicide, admitting he was driving the vehicle that killed 26-year-old city resident Leonel Lopez Hernandez on January 25, 2012.

Workshop Prepares Local Parents For New NJ Car Seat Law

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—More than 200 backpacks and 50 carseats were given away for free as part of back-to-back events held at the New Brunswick HUB Teen Center on Joyce Kilmer Avenue on August 29.

The backpacks went quickly, but more than 50 young and soon-to-be parents hung around the center, waiting to pick up baby car seats and learn the proper way to use them.

North Brunswick Fire Official Admits to Embezzling $89K From Volunteer Fire Company

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ—Just six days before the largest fire in the town's history, North Brunswick fire official Craig Snediker was sent a proposed plea deal by federal investigators looking into his embezzlement of funds.

In addition to serving as the township's fire official, Snediker was also the treasurer of North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company #3, an agency that he stole at least $89,000 from since March 2014.
