NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Rutgers alumni Sean Jones and Orrin Evans are headlining the Central Jersey Jazz Festival in New Brunswick on Saturday, September 19, from 1-6pm at George Street & Livingston Avenue, in what will be a must-see, free performance hosted by the New Brunswick Jazz Project.
Amid a tsunami of negative athletics department press, contemporary jazz giants Jones and Evans bring some good news to the Rutgers University community.
Jones, the Chair of the Brass Department at Berklee College of Music, received his Master’s Degree in Music from Rutgers after studying with storied late Professor William “Prof” Fielder.
Prof Fielder’s other former students include Terrence Blanchard, Terell Stafford, Lee Hogans, and Wynton Marsalis.
Jones has played with Jimmy Heath, Illinois Jacquet, Marcus Miller, and many others. He is trumpet royalty; do not miss a chance to see him this Saturday.
Joining him, New Jersey native Orrin Evans studied at Rutgers before studying with legendary pianist Kenny Barron.
Evans worked as a sideman with Bobby Watson, Ralph Peterson, Duane Eubanks and others, and has released over 15 hip albums since 1994. Check out one of his latest tracks, “Jewels and Baby Yaz,” at the end of this page.
Evans was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2010, and as any New Brunswick Jazz Project patron will tell you, he kills every one of his New Brunswick gigs.
