UPDATES (8/24): NBPD Captain JT Miller identified the pedestrian as 32-year-old Lakia Torres of Newark, and the driver as 26-year-old Ugonna Nworu of Piscataway.

“No summons were issued at the time of this report. Ms. Torres received a minor abrasion to her arm and complained of pain,” said Miller, who confirmed she was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Sheriff Millie Scott confirmed Torres was released from the hospital but has not returned to work.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A Middlesex County Sheriff’s Officer was struck by an automobile near the intersection of New and Kirkpatrick Streets during the evening rush hour on August 21.

The incident occurred at about 4:35pm at one of the more dangerous intersections in downtown, where the Middlesex County Family Court, according to police radio transmissions.

Between 4 and 5pm, the area is overwhelmed with the vehicles of government workers departing from the downtown district.

Sheriff’s Officers provide security in both of the county’s courthouses, and are also responsible for transporting prisoners and arresting people with warrants.

A NJ.com report on the crash quoted NBPD Captain JT Miller as saying the injuries “appear minor in nature.”

Police did not immediately identify the victim or the driver, but Miller indicated to NJ.com that the victim was a female.

According to police radio transmissions, the victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
