NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The first step towards becoming one of “New Brunswick’s bravest” is applying to take a civil service test for the position of entry level firefighter.

The state’s Civil Service Commission (CSC) is currently planning to offer the test in the fall of 2015, but the deadline to apply is Monday, August 31.

While many communities are served exclusively by volunteer firefighters, New Brunswick is one of the few in Middlesex County with a paid fire department.  It is one of the largest departments in Central New Jersey.

There is a $35 application fee and candidates must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid NJ driver’s license may be required.  In New Brunswick, the position is only open to current city residents.

If you are already a volunteer firefighter, you can be as old as 40, but if not, the age limit is 35.

Applications are only being accepted online, through the CSC website at the following link: https://info.csc.state.nj.us/oas/Applicant_Login.aspx?Symbol=M9999T&Form_ID=FF

“This is step #1 in becoming a City of New Brunswick Fire Fighter. Submit an application today!” wrote New Brunswick Fire Lt. Chris Stellatella on Facebook, while sharing a flyer with details.

“Time is ticking,” wrote Stellatella.  “Only a little time left to apply for the best career in the world!”
