PISCATAWAY, NJ–International supermarket chain Aldi has dubbed August “National Hiring Month” and the “low-price grocery leader” says it’s looking to fill some 2,500 Store Associate, Shift Manager and Manager Trainee positions across the country.
The chain boasts more than 1,300 locations in 32 states, including the Aldi Food Market on Van Dyke Avenue in New Brunswick.
That store is currently looking for store associates and held a recruiting event on August 11.
A similar event will be held at the Aldi on Centennial Avenue in Piscataway on Saturday, August 22 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
The Aldi website also lists a hiring event set for September 12 at the Aldi market in South Plainfield at the same time. The store is located at 1620 Park Avenue.
New Brunswick Today caught up with district manager Randy Martinez, who says the in-person events can draw up to 200 applicants depending on the store location.
Asked how many people he’d be hiring, Martinez said they didn’t have a set number, adding that the grocer is looking for both full and part-time store associates and pays $12 an hour.
“It’s a good time to join the company because we are growing very much,” Martinez said. “[We are looking for] as many people as I can find, to be honest.”
He says Aldi holds the mini-job-fairs on an “as needed basis” and publicizes them on the internet at aldistorejobs.com where the main job requirements are also found.
At the Van Dyke Avenue event, New Brunswick Today asked one applicant, city resident Dwan Moore, what motivated her to show up at the store on Van Dyke Avenue for the event.
“I like Aldi’s. I’m a shopper at Aldi’s. This is my store and I like it,” said Moore, adding that she need a job. “This is my field. I’m a certified cook. I like to interact with people.”
Moore explained that she was formerly a prep cook at the FreshGrocer, where she was employed until the store closed in May 2014, just 18 months after opening.
Moore said she enjoyed working there and had been with the company for nearly the entire time it was open for business in the Hub City.
Asked what department she was hoping to work in at Aldi’s she said: “Wherever they put me. I need to make my ends meet and everything.”
As we reported, a new Key Foods supermarket recently replaced the vacant FreshGrocer and is opening for business today.
