PISCATAWAY, NJ—Rutgers University’s football team has once again added a new member to its growing 2016 recruiting class, as Pennsylvania defensive end Tymir Oliver has committed to the program.
Oliver was long expected to end up at Rutgers, but finally made it official that he will be playing college football “on the banks” on August 5.
The pass rusher announced his commitment to the Scarlet Knights on Twitter: “Blessed to Announce My Commitment to Rutgers University #CHOPNation #RU16”
Recruiting site 247Sports.com lists Oliver as a three-star recruit, and the 31st ranked prospect in the state of Pennsylania.
He is coach Kyle Flood and the Rutgers football team’s 18th member of the 2016 recruiting class.
Rutgers now boasts three Pennsylvania commits in its 2016 class, with linebacker Rashawn Battle and quarterback Anthony Russo also hailing from the Keystone State.
Oliver is just the second defensive lineman of the class, joining Florida defensive tackle Jarrod Hewitt, who committed to Rutgers in June.
Oliver, who is entering his final season at West Philadelphia Catholic, will join the Scarlet Knights prior to the 2016 season and compete for playing time on the defensive line.
There will be big shoes to fill at the position that season, as redshirt senior defensive end Djwany Mera is entering his final season with the program, and Oliver will be look to earn snaps as the Knights work to replace Mera.
Rutgers already has a bevy of talented defensive ends on the squad, including last year’s breakout star redshirt sophomore Kemoko Turay and true freshman Marques Ford, who was a four-star recruit out of high school.
The Scarlet Knights faced a lot of competition in acquiring Oliver’s services, as he had a total of twelve offers from universities.
Oliver’s other offers included programs in his home state like Pitt, Villanova and Temple, as well as Big Ten foes Northwestern, Purdue and Illinois.
This is the second time Rutgers has landed an Illinois target in the past two weeks, as kicker Alex Barbir chose Rutgers over the Fighting Illini back on July 24.
Flood and the rest of the coaches will look to keep building this recruiting class with just under six months to go until National Signing Day 2016.
