NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) identified the victim of a fatal shooting in South Brunswick as 24-year-old Alicia Martinez-Izaguirr of New Brunswick.

Martinez-Izaguirr, a Honduran immigrant who called the Hub City home for almost a decade, was appparently killed inside a vehicle parked outside her job at a warehouse at approximately 7 am on June 25.

The MCPO and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Martinez was fatally shot inside a white Honda Accord near the ProLogis warehouse at 200 Docks Corner Road in South Brunswick.

“It is believed that Alicia Martinez realized someone was following her,” reported ABC New York’s Anthony Johnson.

The ABC report said Martinez’s vehicle was parked near a company called Drive Medical, but “not in a regular parking space.”  The damaged vehicle was removed from the scene with the driver’s side window blown out and the back window shattered.

The victim’s brother Marlon Martinez said he was shocked that anyone would want to harm his sister, according to NJ.com.  He also said that she moved to the United States from Honduras when she was about 15 in order to make a better life for herself.

“Nobody deserves to die that way,” her brother Marlon Martinez told NJ.com’s Brian Amaral. “She was trying to make her American dream come true.”

Others on social media expressed their sympathy and grief over the loss of the young woman.

“Our bond was strong,” wrote one Twitter user.  “You’re smile and eyes would brighten up anybody’s day. I Love You Cousin.”

“So sad to have lost someone so happy and loved by her family,” posted one Facebook user.

Others who didn’t even know the victim posted their condolances.

“RIP to Alicia Martinez never personally met the girl but it’s really tragic what happen to her,” said another Twitter user.  “My condolences to her family. Really sad”

The police have not made any arrests yet, but said that the investigation is ongoing.
