NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Police requested backup for “crowd control” after they began looking into an incident where multiple gunshots were heard inside the Robeson Village public housing neighborhood, according to police radio transmissions.
According to NBPD Captain JT Miller, city police responded to the area of Gatling Court at about 1:15am on June 21. Â But when they did, “a crowd formed and began to taunt the officers.”
“As officers investigated the report of gunshots, several individuals in the crowd interfered with the officer’s investigation,” said Miller.
Officers arrested two 18-year-olds, Allen Kareem of New Brunswick and Ashaan Wroten of North Brunswick, and charged them with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstruction.
The incident comes just over three days after gunshots damaged a vehicle and a building in the nearby Schwarz Homes on Wright Place, and just hours after a strange incident that occurred two blocks away involving a “party bus.”
“On Saturday evening at approximately 11:40 pm officers responded to the area of Roosevelt Avenue to investigate criminal mischief to a bus,” said Captain Miller.
“Upon the officer’s arrival they spoke with the bus driver and passengers who indicated a group of individuals threw rocks at the bus damaging the windows.”
According to police radio transmissions, passengers were concerned that gunshots had been fired at the bus.
“No injuries were reported and neither the passengers nor the driver could identify or describe the suspects,” said Miller. Â “No gunshots were fired at the bus.”
