NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Police say a man with a gun took a woman’s purse on Easton Avenue at approximately 10:53pm on May 18 and hopped into the passenger seat of a vehicle headed towards downtown.

The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) is investigating the armed robbery, which occurred near the intersection with Prosper Street, according to a Rutgers University crime alert.

“In this incident the victim, who is unaffiliated with the university, reported that she was approached by a male perpetrator who attempted to grab her purse,” reads the alert.

When the victim resisted, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and took the purse.

According to the victim, the perpetrator entered a white SUV or van and fled the area down Easton Avenue towards Hamilton Street.

The description of the perpetrator is limited at this time, according to the alert, but police radio transmissions indicate the suspect was a black man wearing a black shirt.

The getaway vehicle was described as a “possible SUV” and no description was given of its driver.

The NBPD is actively investigating this incident and asks that anyone with information to please contact the NBPD Detective Bureau at 732-745-5217.

It was the 23rd incident to generate such an alert this year, and not the first to occur in the vicinity of Prosper Street.

On April 26, three men armed with a gun and a bat forced their way into a Prosper Street home and took marijuana and money from the residents.
