NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Sign ups for the fourth consecutive “Project Move out” will be coming to a close at noon on May 20.
The ‘project” is a chance for Rutgers University students to get their furniture and other bulky items picked up for free during the time of year when many college students move.
Students who live in New Brunswick can request a pickup until the deadline by registering online at http://ruoffcampus.rutgers.edu/projectmoveout.
First introduced in 2012, Project: Move Out is a service where the bulk garbage of students living off campus in New Brunswick, is picked up for free by the city government.
Bulk pickup will only be done on certain dates: May 21, 22, 26, and 27.
Bulk waste items may not be placed curbside earlier than 5 p.m. the night before the scheduled collection date, according to the city.
Project Move Out was first established in response for the proposed city ordinance that would have ended the long-standing policy of city workers picking up “bulk” garbage items such as floor lamps, tables, and couches during a proposed a “moratorium” from May 10 to June 10 every year.
The proposed law, championed by Councilman Kevin Egan, would have required all students and other New Brunswick residents to drop bulk garbage such as televisions, coaches, beds, and other heavy items at 400 Jersey Avenue, far from the Rutgers campuses and most off-campus housing.
Due to the overwhelming amount of complaints over the ordinance, New Brunswick’s city government and Rutgers University started Project Move Out in order to take care of bulk garbage without causing students and others without means of transportation needed hassle.
Project Move Out also helps to keep the streets of New Brunswick clear and clean of any garbage that would otherwise stink up the streets, and efforts are made to recycle as much of the waste as possible, according to officials.
