WOODBRIDGE, NJ–Wegmans has recalled more than 12,000 packages of its own 12-ounce “Organic Food You Feel Good About Just Picked Frozen Spinach” (UPC 77890-32932), due to possible listeria contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

The product was sold in the frozen food department of the company’s 85 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts between January 27 and March 21.

Only packages with the following codes are affected: BEST USED BY JAN 26 2017 50265, and BEST USED BY FEB 02 2017 50335.

“No illnesses associated with this recall have been reported to date,” says the release.

As we reported, Wegmans had to recall its walnuts last week.

One day prior to the spinach recall, on March 22, Amy’s Kitchen, Inc. voluntarily recalled just under 74,000 cases of approximately 20 products containing spinach “based on a recall notice from one of their organic spinach suppliers.”

“Amy’s may have received organic spinach with the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections,”says a separate FDA press release.

The recalled Amy’s products were distributed to stores, nationwide, and sold between January and March, the FDA said.

The agency also said that the company was not aware of any illness complaints related to the recall.

But a report on NJ.com indicates that both the recalls can be traced back to a single supplier of organic spinach.

“The voluntary recalls of an assortment of frozen meals and frozen spinach was issued after the companies were notified by a supplier that its organic spinach had a possible presence of listeria monocytogenes,” writes NJ.com.

The only supplier the FDA mentions by name in both releases is Twin City Foods, Inc., based in Stanwood, Washington.
