NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers University sufferred another student death, this time the victim was an accomplished violinist who was studying music as a graduate student.
The passing of Caroline Yoshimoto, 28, a doctoral student at the Mason Gross School of Arts, marks at least the tenth student death since September.
Richard L. Edwards Chancellor of Rutgers-New Brunswick said that she unexpectedly died on Thursday February 26 and that her cause of death was not stated.
According to The Daily Targum, Yoshimoto’s untimely passing marks the tenth student death faced by the Rutgers community since Sept. of last year and Feb. of this year.
She learned how to play the violin at age seven and performed for the Young Steinway Concert Series at the age of 17, according to the Daily Targum.
“Yoshimoto was a graduate of Northwestern University, as well as a highly accomplished violinist in the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra,” Edwards said.
She also taught violin and viola to young children at the SpeakMusic Conservatory in Highland Park.
Edwards offered his condolences to Yoshimoto’s family as well as her friends.
“This is a devastating loss for Caroline’s family and for her many friends here at the Mason Gross School,” Edwards said. “We ask that you join us in extending your thoughts and prayers to her family and to all who knew and loved her.”
Yoshimoto’s memorial service was held in the Richard Shindell Choral Hall, located in Mortensen Hall on Douglass campus.
Counseling for members of the University community grieving Yoshimoto’s death is available at Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), located at 17 Senior Street in New Brunswick.
