Edison BOE Schedules Referendum on Borrowing $18.6 Million to Rebuild School Destroyed in Fire

EDISON, NJ—The Edison Township Board of Education is expected to vote tonight to hold a special election to be held on March 10,  for consideration of a bond proposal to fund the replacement of James Monroe Elementary School, which was destroyed by fire early last year.

The school board meeting is in South Edison at the Washington Elementary School at 7 pm (on January 28), and is sure to move this unique referendum forward.

Rutgers Pianists to Play Carnegie Hall on February 17

NEW YORK, NY—Several pianists from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University will be playing, “The Unknown Diabelli Variations” at Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s most famous music halls.

Located on 7th Avenue in Manhattan, the music hall opened in 1891, having been commissioned by businessman Andrew Carnegie, and designed by architect William Burnet Tuthill.

Among musicians and performers, it is usually considered an honor to take the stage there.

Animal Cruelty Charges Filed Against Former Officials at Helmetta Animal Shelter

HELMETTA, NJ–The New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) annonced on January 21 that animal cruelty charges have been filed against the former director and former assistant director of the Helmetta Regional Animal Shelter.

Michal Cielesz, 50, the ex-director, and her husband Richard Cielesz, 63, the ex-assistant director, have each been charged with 6 counts of animal cruelty.

Man Assaulted After Chasing Robbers Who Took His Cellphone

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ— Shortly before midnight on Friday, January 23, a man reported that he was assaulted and robbed in the city's Sixth Ward.

The victim reported that he was walking in the area between Bristol Street and Delafield Street, when he was approached by a group of four or five men.

A member of the group allegedly grabbed a cell phone from the victim's hand, and fled down Bristol Street towards Guilden Street.

Dollar Tree to Buy Family Dollar for $8.5 Billion

EDISON, NJ–Dollar Tree Inc., the nation's leading operator of discount variety stores, will acquire Family Dollar in a deal that creates a company with 13,000 stores in North America and annual sales exceeding $18 billion.

The completion of the transaction is expected as early as March 2015, according to a Dollar Tree news release.

Family Dollar shareholders voted overwhelmingly on January 22 to approve the Dollar Tree merger, rather than go with its other option, an opportunity to be acquired by Dollar General.

Johnson & Johnson Seeking Nominations for 2015 Janssen Award for Biomedical Research

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On January 21, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) opened nominations for the Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research, a prestigious award to recongnize individuals whose scientific research has made, or has the potential to make, significant contributions toward the improvement of human health. 

Nomimations will be accepted until March 15, for consideration by an independent selection committee of scientists, and the winner of the award will be announced in the spring, said J&J in a press release.
