NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On December 17, the New Jersey Red Umbrella Alliance (NJRUA) will host their first public event dedicated to the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, inside Christ Church at 5 Paterson Street.
From 6-8:30pm, the event will include a candlelight vigil in honor of sex workers who have experienced violence or have been murdered and three educational and collaborative workshops led by community leaders.
The event aims to raise awareness about the violence that is commonly committed against sex workers.
NJRUA is a grassroots organization “of activists and allies who are dedicated to promoting, defending, and advocating for the human rights of sex workers in the state of New Jersey.”
The organization believes that “all forms of sex work should be decriminalized and that the voices of sex workers should be heard when deciding on policies that impact them.”
The International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers was initiated in 2003 in honor of the victims of the Green River Killer, a serial killer in Seattle, Washington, whose victims were mostly sex workers.
Since it began in 2003, the Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers has garnered national attention and has empowered people from all over the world to organize against discrimination and remember victims of violence.
