Officials Say City Close to Deal With Supermarket to Replace FreshGrocer

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—City officials say they are close to a deal that would bring another supermarket to the downtown space that was once occupied by the short-lived FreshGrocer.

New Brunswick Parking Authority (NBPA) Executive Director Mitch Karon confirmed his agency was "in negotiations" with a supermarket operator to replace the FreshGrocer, which closed down in May.

“Reclaim Rutgers” Protests Across All Campuses Call For Fair Labor Contracts, Affordable Tuition

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Hundreds of faculty, students, and staff gathered across the Rutgers campuses—all four in New Brunswick, plus Newark and Camden—to protest for fair contracts, and greater communication with the administration.

Including off-campus sites that Rutgers has control over, including its new medical school locations, the AFT-AAUP estimates more than 1,000 individuals took part in the actions Thursday afternoon, in 20 different locations.

Another Shooting Incident in New Brunswick Apartments

UPDATE (10/27): City police identified the victims of the shooting as Ricky Drake (30 years of age from Piscataway) and Ryan Howard (24 years of age from New Brunswick).  Both were taken to a hospital and treated for gunshot wounds to the leg.

"The initial police investigation suggests this shooting stems from an ongoing dispute between the victims, an acquaintance and the shooter," reads the official police statement.

6th Annual 5K Run at RU Stadium Raises Funds For Rutgers Against Hunger

PISCATAWAY, NJ—The "Run for RAH," a USATF-certified 5K race and 1-mile Fun Walk will take place for the sixth consecutive year this Sunday, October 26, beginning at the North Gate of the Rutgers football stadium.

The event, sponsored by the Rutgers University Alumni Association (RUAA), supports Rutgers against Hunger (RAH), a university-wide initiative fighting the problem of hunger throughout New Jersey, and kicks off a week of festivities for the school's annual Homecoming celebration.

Hundreds March Against Domestic Violence in New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Several hundred community members attended the New Brunswick Domestic Violence Coalition’s (NBDVC) annual rally and march against domestic violence on Saturday, October 18.

The rally began at First Reformed Church on Bayard Street, where Rev. Susan Kramer Mills, who is also the executive director of Town Clock Community Development Corporation, gave tours of the permanent, supportive, and affordable apartments that are currently under construction inside the church.
