NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On Saturday, October 25, from 10am to 3pm, the New Brunswick Community Farmers Market will hold a “Dia De Los Muertos party” at 178 Jones Avenue, near the Cook campus of Rutgers University.

Dia De Los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” is a long-running Mexican tradition and is also celebrated in many other cultures around the world.

The celebration will be open to the public and individuals are invited to have refreshments and hot cider along with harvesting marigolds, winterizing garden beds and build a Dia De Los Muertos altar.

Celebrations and rituals surrounding dead ancestors can be dated back nearly 3,000 years to the Aztec civilization.

The holiday spans from October 31 to November 2 and is dedicated towards the remembrance of deceased family and loved ones, with each day holding its own meaning.

Over the course of the holiday, people honor children and innocents, adults, and family members who had passed by decorating graves, altars, and gathering with family.

The three-day fiesta associated with the holiday is full of marigolds, sugar skulls, and traditional foods and decorations.

Marigolds are symbolic as they are known as the Flower of the Dead and are typically left on altars constructed for the celebration.
