NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Are you ready to create some unique arts and crafts at the local library?

The New Brunswick arts community may become even larger and more inclusive after the launch of the new Handcrafting Makerspace program, a joint initiative from the New Jersey State Library and LibraryLinkNJ.

As NBT reported earlier, the New Brunswick Free Public Library received a $10,000 grant to host community programs such as sewing, knitting, jewelry making, and paper crafts.  The NBFPL was also one of fifteen libraries selected to participate in the program.

“Please stop by the library’s Community Room anytime [Saturday] between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to explore the library’s MakerSpace tools and supplies,” stated Library Director Robert Belvin as he gave more details about the plan to press officials curious about the new launch.”Make your own bag with our new sewing machines! Bring a t-shirt to customize using our new heat press. Other creative crafts will also be featured at this free, all-ages Kickoff event.” Belvin continued.

The state-wide program was started as a solution to lack of variety in local events in public libraries throughout the state of New Jersey, and provide opportunities for participation in handcrafting and other creative pursuits.

“The goal of the NBFPL Handcrafting Makerspace is to provide access to materials and equipment used in hands-on methods of creation, including sewing machines, a silhouette cutter, a heat press for transferring designs onto fabric, jewelry making, knitting, crocheting, and more,” said Belvin.

Belvin said the library will provide access t0 materials, equipment, and classes used in the production of handcrafting and traditional methods of creation, including button making, printing with transfer paper, sewing machines, knitting and assorted looms.

Residents who seek to improve their skills in handcrafting can inquire with the librarians selected to oversee special programs designed to allow children, teens, and adults their own unique access to Makerspace items.

Tutorials using digital or analog technology, sewing, drawstring bags, and natural interpretations of jewelry, will also make their debut this Saturday, where residents can visit the library to gain hands on experience and develop skills in the different areas of handcrafting.
