NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–New Brunswick police announced yesterday that they are investigating a shooting that occurred early on Saturday, September 6 near the intersection of Handy Street and Jersey Avenue.

Officers responded to a disturbance call phoned in by a passerby around 2:30 am and shortly afterward, police radio transmissions indicate that shots had been fired.

A 45-year-old New Brunswick resident named Enrique Perez suffered a gunshot wound to his buttock, according to a press statement issued by police.

The police investigation revealed that the shooting was spurred on by a fight involving at least four people outside of Mi Tierra Bar on Jersey Avenue, and then moved into the adjacent Walgreens parking lot.

The suspected shooter was described as a stocky Dominican male wearing a light blue shirt and shorts, and is said to have fled in a black Mercedes-Benz driven by a female.

Perez was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he received treatment for the non-fatal injury.

Police have yet to identify the suspect, and individuals with information about the incident are asked to call Detective Harry Lemmerling at (732) 745-5217.
