NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–The annual Hub City Sounds summer concert series is set to kick off next this Saturday, August 9 at 3pm in Boyd Park, located between Route 18 and the Raritan River.

Each year, the New Brunswick Cultural Center hosts a variety of musical, dance and theater open air performances. This year the concert series will run from August 9 to September 27. 

Performances are hosted at the Boyd Park ampitheater, the State Theater and Crossroads Theater.

The first performance for the concert series begings with “Spread the Word: Jazz and Gospel in the Park,” by the New Brunswick District Jazz Band.

As part of the New Brunswick Jazz Project, the New Brunswick District Jazz Band has played in local venues, bars and restaurants. 

On August 23, local residents will have the opportunity to attend a performance of “They Can Dance” at the Crossroads Theatre, featuring rising dance artists Kyle Marshall, Monica Gonzalez, Molly Galbraith and Sarah Lifson of the New Brunswick-based coLAB Arts.

Founded in in 2006 as a student organization at Rutgers, coLAB Arts now seeks to “cultivate a hip, mindful, and inclusive Hub City community of artists, audiences, and critics empowered to create inspired and inspiring art”.

Two weeks later, on September 6, the summer concert series will return to Boyd Park with a performance of “Crossroads in the Park,” where the Crossroads Theater company will be performing. 

In the following week, the Hub City Summer Concerts Series will overlap with the 2014 Central New Jersey Jazz Festival and the Penn State vs. Rutgers football game. 

The annual Central Jersey Jazz Festival will actually span the entire weekend, and on Saturday, September 13, patrons can attend performances at Monument Square starting at 1 pm.

On Saturday, September 27 at 3pm, The Hub City Sounds Summer Concert Series will feature its closing performance “Kids Day At the Park,” a joint venture of the American Repertory Ballet and the George Street Playhouse’s Educational Tour Program. 

Although not officialy part of the concert series, Boyd Park will be hosting the annual Raritan River Festival & Rubber Duck Race.
