Rutgers Requires Merchandise Manufacturers to Sign Worker Rights Accord, Cutting Ties with Some

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—In response to the harsh treatment in the sweatshops of Bangladesh, as well as the efforts of a collaboration of local student organizations, Rutgers University has cut ties with two clothing manufacturers.

Business relationships with OC Sports/Outdoor Cap and VF Corporation, which owns the Jansport line of apparell, were ended earlier this month.

EOF Students Speak Out in Support of Counselor After Reports of Military Style Ritual

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Dozens of current and former Rutgers students jumped to the defense of a university employee accused of conducting a “military style” lecture for incoming freshmen in the university’s Equal Opportunity Fund (EOF) program last summer.

Students in the program are typically the first in their family to attend college, and incoming first-year students are required to pass a five-week "Summer Institute" to prepare them for college. The program usually begins just days after the students finish high school.

Literacy New Jersey Merger Provides Improved Services to Adults Learning English

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Literary Programs of New Jersey and Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey, two organizations that served the Middlesex County area, have partnered with Literacy New Jersey in February, in a merger that combined seven different groups all with the same goal: improving literacy in their communities.

The newly formed conglomerate of those seven groups, Literacy New Jersey (LNJ), is based in Metuchen and offers services in New Brunswick.
