NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On Tuesday, June 17, Mayor Jim Cahill promoted a 20 year member Darrin Van Demark as Captain of the New Brunswick Fire Department.

Darrin Van Demark was surrounded by his family when he took the oath for office as Captain for the New Brunswick Fire Department. The oath was administered by Mayor Cahill.

He is one of seven Captains in the department, each earning a $120,412 annual salary.  Previously, Van Demark made $111,218 as a Lieutenant.

“Our firefighters are the best in the business, which is why I am honored to announce Captain Van Demark’s promotion,” said Cahill.

“We have an extraordinary team of men and women serving in our fire department, and all of them should be recognized for the hard work they do every day.”

Captain Van Demark also received several awards for his efforts in the line of Duty, including New Jersey Fireman’s Benevolent Association Valor Award, the St. Barnabas Burn Foundation Valor Award, The New Brunswick Fire Department Life Saving Award and the New Brunswick Fire Department Meritorious Service Award.

Captain Van Demark will be assigned to Engine Number 2. Denmark joined the New Brunswick Fire Department on February 12, 1994.

He was then promoted to Lieutenant on June 22, 2010 and assigned to Engine 1. 

The City of New Brunswick is the county seat of Middlesex County, and home to Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and a many major healthcare providers.

The New Brunswick Fire Department is the one of a handful of fire departments in the county where firefighters are paid.
