NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A large pole holding up a either a traffic light fell on a person after it was struck by a car at the intersection of Jersey Avenue and Handy Street.

Dispatchers told cops that 9-1-1 was “going off the hook” around 2 am, sending police, ambulances, and PSE&G electric workers to the scene.

A city police officer was able to lift the pole off of the injured pedestrian according to police radio transmissions while emergency medical personnel and firefighters hurried to the scene.

One of the busiest intersections in the city, Jersey and Handy meet at the site of the Walgreen’s pharmacy, where traffic flows from those roads onto French and Alexander Streets respectively.

Based on the radio transmissions, the incident appears to be a crash involving only one car.  The passenger of that car did not cooperate with the investigation and walked away, according to the audio.

It is not immediately clear what happened to the driver of the vehicle, or the victim, who left in an ambulance.

A short while later, another man called police to say he had been struck further up Jersey Avenue by the same vehicle.  It is not immediately clear if that man was a pedestrian or behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Spokespersons for the New Brunswick Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for further information.
