NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Police responded to a “shots fired” call at approximately 3:35am this morning near the Hope Manor apartment complex at the intersection of Remsen Avenue and George Street.

According to police radio transmissions, authorities located a victim who had been shot multiple times in the vicinity of Hope Manor, one of the city’s four public housing developments.

“I just had a caller said a female was shot six times.  She walked possibly from Remsen to Redmond,” a dispatcher relayed to police on the scene.

Shortly thereafter, the victim was located on nearby Hope Manor Drive, a small road running through the housing development.

Police later determined that the scene of the shooting was just a few feet away where Remsen Avenue meets Welton Street, in front of the Sanford Bates House.

The Bates House is owned by the NJ Association on Correction (NJAC) and serves as transitional housing for parolees.  From 1972 to 2005, it was a halfway house, one of the first in the state.

According to the NJAC website, the Bates House is funded by the New Jersey State Parole Board (NJSPB) as part of a program called Parolee Aftercare and Transitional Housing (PATH).

“PATH fulfills a new need that the NJSPB is finding more and more difficult for parolees: housing,” reads the website.

“Upon parole from a New Jersey institution, individuals are required to provide a residence address and many are not able to do so. This new program allows residents to not only provide a housing address in order for parole to occur, it also assists them in finding permanent housing and employment during their stay at the program.”

Authorities scoured the area for a blue pickup truck that was said to be fleeing the scene of the shooting, as well as a four-door silver vehicle with three people in it.

It’s not immediately clear if police made any arrests in the case. The victim was transported to a local hospital in the back of an ambulance, and their status is not currently known.
