NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Marissa Paternoster, lead guitarist and singer of Screaming Females, has so far painted two big bird-looking creatures on the side of the parking deck, located at Plum Street and Prospect Street.

Joe Steinhardt, founder of New Brunswick based record label Don Giovanni Records, has been working closely with the city’s growing non-profit organization coLAB Arts on developing this public art project.

Joe Steinhardt, whose label also sponsored the New Brunswick Mets Little League team, tells New Brunswick Today that the mural has been a long-awaited project.

Steinhardt says for the past five years, he has “been talking with Marissa about how she should have a mural in New Brunswick.” He says he “always told her [he] would figure out a way to get her one.”

Last summer, Steinhardt presented bands from his record company, including Brick Mower and Screaming Females at coLAB presented “Love New Brunswick Weekend: A celebration of the eclectic music scene in Boyd Park,” part of the annual concert series Hub City Sounds.

This is where he first met with coLAB, who has been instrumental in providing the space on the Plum Street Parking Deck. For anyone interested in learning more or becoming involved with coLAB, there will be an information session at the Hidden Grounds coffee shop located at 106 Easton Avenue tonight, May 21, at 7pm.

“We are looking for leaders, artists, and volunteers to help create and sustain our new arts center in New Brunswick dedicated to supporting and presenting the emerging artists of our community,” reads the event page.
