NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The city’s police unions have agreed to four more years of raises on March 25, six days before City Mayor Jim Cahill announced that he was running for a seventh four-year term.
The new four-year agreements, if approved by City Council and ratified by members of both unions, would last through December 31, 2017.
The agreements call for all police to receive 1.5% raises for 2014, a 2.0% raise in 2015, 1.5% in 2016, and 2.0% in 2017.
“The city negotiated a new vacation schedule for new hires, a new longevity schedule for new hires. We negotaited some givebacks in the area of prescription drug. We have placed the caps on vacation accruals.
Loughlin noted that the PBA had bargained for “a shorter workday for those who work a 4-3 schedule,” 15 minutes shorter to be specific.
The City Council has scheduled a final vote on the agreements at their upcoming April 16 meeting, to be held at City Hall (78 Bayard St.) at 6:30pm.
The Police Department’s 20 seargents currently make $111,218, but like all officers, they will see a retroactive raise to $112,886 dating back to January 1.
By 2017, with the same scheduled pay bumps as rank-and-file-officers, seargents will make $119,208.
Salaries for the department’s six lieutenants will rise from $127,395 to $134,530 over the life of the agreement, while three captains will see their annual pay rise from $143,787 to $151, 840.
