UPDATE (2/16): The murder victim has been identified as William R. McCaw, a former Rutgers student who currently attends Kean University.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—New Brunswick homicide detectives, county medical examiners, and representatives of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office were at 28 Hartwell Street this afternoon investigating what appears to be a murder.

According to police radio transmissions, the body of a man was found in the backyard by a resident of the home and reported to police at 10:26am.

“Got a call from a resident about a man in the snow.  It looks like there’s blood, he said,” said a dispatcher who sent police and emergency medical personnel to the scene.

Police who arrived on scene classified the case as an assault.  The victim has not yet been identified, but according to social media postings the victim appeared to be a young man.

“Three houses down from me u can see a kid in a body bag,” tweeted a user at 1:08pm, in a post that has since been deleted.

Located between Hamilton Street and Central Avenue, Hartwell Street is part of a neighborhood that is home to many Rutgers University students.

A large blood stain could be seen in the snow near a black sport utility vehicle parked in the driveway, with an open driver’s side door.
