NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Jersey Film Festival, hosted every year in New Brunswick, will be kicking off tonight on the Rutgers University campus.

The festival, which is hosted by the Rutgers Film Co-Op, New Jersey Media Arts Center, and the Rutgers University Program in Cinema Studies, will feature documentaries, workshops, short films, guest independent and international films. 

There will also be guest appearances from producers, directors and actors involved in some of the films. 

The New Jersey Film Festival was first hosted by Albert Gabriel Nigrin in 1981, and is broken down into a spring, summer and fall segment each year.

Tonight’s screening is of the film “AKT 2,” by Robert Frtiz.

This year’s festival will also feature “Malala: A Girl From Paradise”, directed by Mohsin Abbas, which explores the life of Malala, an activist for women’s education.

Several films about New Jersey, including one about New Brunswick, will be screened as part of the “Jersey Fresh/Remembering Our Town” celebration on April 26.

The films will be part of Rutgers Day, the day long, University-wide open house, and will feature a series of short films shot around New Brunswick, as well as documentaries on the history of the city. 

Films that are screening at Vorhees Hall #105, near the corner of George and Hamilston St, will start at 7 pm, while those showing at Ruth Adams Building #001. near the corner of George and Jones St, will start at 6 pm.
