NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—In response to predictions of cold and snowy weather Thursday evening, the city’s parking authority opened parking decks to city residents at 4pm.
Meanwhile, authorities declared a “CODE BLUE,” which means Elijah’s Promise, the city’s only soup kitchen, will be open for shelter overnight.
Elijah’s Promise, located at 18 Neilson St., opens its doors to those in need of shelter every night when the temperature is predicted to go below 20 degrees. Â The shelter will be open from 8pm tonight until 7am the following morning.
“If anyone sees a person on the streets who needs help, they are advised to call the Homeless Hotline,” at 877-652-1148 or by dialing 2-1-1, according to the New Brunswick Police emergency alert.
“For those seeking shelter, with beds please go to the Ozanam Shelter at 20 Abeel Street for assistance.”
FREE SHELTERED PARKING FOR CITY RESIDENTS
As of 4pm today, city residents can move their cars into one of five city parking garages. Â They will be forced to remove their vehicles at 8am the following morning, unless the city deems the “snow emergency” still in effect.
Residents will be required to show proof of residency when they leave to qualify for free parking.
The above image also indicates in red some of the city’s “snow emergency routes” where parked cars will be towed en masse.
But, residents and visitors should beware that due to the snow emergency, it is now illegal to park on ALL of the following streets in the city, as indicated on the full map :
