Community Mourns Loss of Transgender Activist Eyricka Morgan

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Community members gathered last night for a candlelight vigil behind the chapel on the Douglass campus of Rutgers to remember a young woman whose brutal murder on Baldwin Street has shaken the city.

Eryicka Morgan, 26, was stabbed to death following an argument with a fellow housemate.  As we reported last week, Devonte Scott was arrested and charged with the murder the next morning.

9th Annual New Brunswick Jazz Festival Kicks Off in Downtown

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–For the ninth consecutive year, the jazz scene is taking center stage in the city this weekend as the New Brunswick Jazz Festival takes place in several venues.

A kickoff celebration and dance party at Christopher's (located inside the Heldrich Hotel) hosted by the NJ Chapter of Chicago Steppers, and features Valerie Adams and The New Dimensions Band.

The fun continues tomorrow with a variety of performances across the downtown.

Under Pressure From Persistent Activists, Council Passes Permanent Ban on Fracking in New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—For the second year in a row, something that the city administration originally did not want to happen became a reality, thanks to citizens who gathered signatures and submitted legal petitions to the city government.

Last year, citizens fought for and won the right to elect their own school board members in a close vote after submitting a petition to force the issue onto the ballot.

Japanese Mayor to Visit New Brunswick and Speak at Hyatt Next Week

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The mayor of Fukui, Japan, one of New Brunswick's four "sister cities," is going to visit New Brunswick from October 8-11, according to New Brunswick international programs director Michael Tublin.

Mayor Higashimura will speak at the Hyatt Regency about Fukui and the jobs available in that city.

Fukui is on the west coast of Honshu, the largest island in Japan, and it is the capital of Fukui Prefecture. It is an old town, having been inhabited for at least a thousand years.
