NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Día de Muertos, a popular Mexican holiday, begins tomorrow and a local organization will be sponsoring several events during the holiday weekend.

Lazos América Unida, a Oaxacan cultural center based in downtown New Brunswick, will be sponoring the events, which honor the dead.  The name of the holiday translates to “Day of the Dead” in English.

Tonight, there will be a Construcción de Altares (altar building) event in the Carl T. Valenti Community Room at the New Brunswick Public Library.

Families are invited to participate in the Sugar Skull Workshop, reading time, and traditional crafts including papel picado paper flower making with Maria Vivar from Lazos America Unida.

The Día de Muertos exhibit will remain in the library’s Carl T. Valenti Community Room, featuring a visual history of experiences of Latinos in New Brunswick,  Mexican poster art, and an altar where the public will be invited to leave mementos and notes for loved ones.

Día de Muertos is a three-day long celebration starting on October 31 and continuing through November 2.

On November 1, there will be a Día de Muertos party at Lazos América Unida’s 75 Paterson Street headquarters, starting at 8pm going until midnight.

The next day, Saturday November 2, the Calpulli Huehuelatolli dance troupe will perform at the New Brunswick Free Public Library. There will be food, music, and Chumparra, a choclate-based drink served at the Library.

This event is also free and open to the public. It begins at 12pm and ends at 4pm.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Día de Muertos, un evento popular mexicano, inicia manana y una organizacion local estara patrocinando diferentes actividades durante este fin de semana de celebraciones.

Lazos América Unida, una organizacion cultural Mexicana con base en el centro de la ciudad de New Brunswick estara patrocinando algunos de estos eventos, que honran a los muertos o Day of the Dead en ingles.

Este dia Habra una construccion de altares en el centro comunitario Carl T. Valenti de la Biblioteca Publica de New Brunswick.

Los familiares estan invitados a participar en el taller de calaveritas de azucar. Tiempo de lectura y otras manualidades tradicionales como el papel picado y flores de papel por Maria Vivar de Lazos America Unida.

La exhibicion del Día de Muertos se mantendra en el centro comunitario Carl T. Valenti, ademas de otra exhibicion fotografica de las experiencias de hispanos en New Brunswick, asi como arte mexicano y un altar donde las personas que visiten pueden dejar notas para sus seres queridos que han perecido.

En Noviembre 1 habra una vigilia en las instalaciones de Lazos América Unida (75 Paterson Street) , desde las 8 a las 12 pm

Al dia siguiente , Sabado 2 de Noviembre, Kalpulli Huehutlatolli estara presentando danzas y talleres en la Biblioteca de New Brunswick de 12 pm a 4 pm, Habra ademas comida, musica y champurrado. Este y todos los eventos son gratis para el public.
