George Street Closed Due to Partial Collapse of Historic Building

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Bricks reportedly came tumbling from the top of an eight-story building at about 5:30 this morning, prompting the police to close one block of George Street for the past twelve hours.

The Chase bank branch in the building was closed, and the bank is directing people to other branches. One worker named Elizabeth told New Brunswick Today that no one was hurt.

Fighting Films Compete in Festival Tonight at George Street Playhouse

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Near Enemy Film Festival is coming back with a smack to New Brunswick tonight.

Coordinated by the Morristown-based Near Enemy Creative, the festival, now in its second year, will screen 11 short films featuring martial arts and stunt fight choreography.

Ranging 2 to 17 minutes in length, submissions have come from all over the country, including some outside of it. Among the selections are 8 films from the US, one from Canada, one from Brazil, and a 10 minute computer-animated short from Iran.

Overcrowded Involvement Fair Showcases Lack of Multipurpose Space at Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A rainy forecast and poor planning caused a chaotic start to the Rutgers school year Monday, as droves of students were prevented from entering the school's annual involvement fair once the crowd reached capacity.

Normally, the event is held outside on Voorhees Mall, but predicted thunderstorms caused Rutgers to relocate to a student center and gymnasium on College Avenue.  The event began at 2pm, but around 3pm the inclement weather ended, revealing a beautiful day and a mob of students looking to get involved.

Source: PRAB Leader Resigns After Internal Investigation into Claims of Sexual Harrassment

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Following an investigation into claims that he sexually harrassed women who worked for him, Mario Vargas quietly resigned from his executive director position at the Puerto Rican Action Board (PRAB) last month, according to a source.

The source has indicated that Vargas' alleged behavior was the subject of an internal investigation that yielded evidence he had inappropriate relationships with multiple female employees at the non-profit.

Council to Vote Tonight on Rate Hike For Nearly All City Parking Meters

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The price of metered on-street parking will increase between 20% and 50% if the City Council approves a law scheduled for a vote this evening.

The New Brunswick Parking Authority (NBPA) says it wants to implement the rate hike to pay for new parking meters that will take credit cards, as well as a system that will allow for credit card payments via telephone at any meter.

Medical School Merger Creates Financial Issues for Rutgers and Its Students

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On July 1, Rutgers finally absorbed the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, a financially troubled but academically respected medical school that started as a part of Rutgers.

Rutgers took over most parts of UMDNJ this summer.  Meanwhile, the UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine was absorbed by Rowan University and Newark's University Hospital became a separate state-owned entity, no longer be affiliated with any university.
