NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—In anticipation of the upcoming Super Bowl in New Jersey, Tumulty’s Pub on George Street will be hosting a free educational event focusing on human trafficking throughout the United States this Monday August 12 at 6:45pm.

According to Global Financial Integrity’s report on Transnational Crime in the Developing World, human trafficking is a massive global issue with a black market that generates over $31 billion a year, primarily based on the sale or trade of women and children for commercial sexual exploitation

Trafficking is also prevalent in the United States, especially in the vicinity of Super Bowls and other major sporting events.   The massive numbers of wealthy attendees at these events attract the attentions of pimps, who use the opportunity to increase their clientele.

Entitled “Who’s Really Losing at the Super Bowl?  Help Stop Human Trafficking!,” the event will focus on the correlation between increases in human trafficking and the Super Bowl.  This season’s championship game is scheduled to be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot was quoted by USA Today in 2011: “The Super Bowl is the greatest show on Earth, but it also has an ugly underbelly. It’s commonly known as the single largest human trafficking incident in the United States.”

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children told Forbes Magazine that “the 2010 Miami Super Bowl brought 10,000 prostitutes to the city. By the same group’s measure 2011’s Dallas Super Bowl resulted in 133 underage arrests for prostitution.”

There are debates over the nature of trafficking as a widespread phenomenon and as to whether the statistics are exaggerated, and authorities in Phoenix, Arizona and Tampa, Florida reported little change in the number prostitution or trafficking arrests when they were host to the game.

Last month, the FBI arrested 150 pimps and rescued 105 children in the largest sex trafficking bust in US history.  Seventy of those arrests were from New Jersey.

For more information about human trafficking and how to get involved in the fight against, come to Tumulty’s Pub on August 12, at 6:45pm.

The occasion will include guest speakers Shea Rhodes, an attorney who has prosecuted traffickers in Philadelphia, author and advocate Carol Metzker, and local activist Caitlyn Tumulty.

Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served buffet-style and drinks will be available at the cash bar.
