NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Two free concerts this weekend at the Boyd Park amphitheatre will kick off the second annual Hub City Sounds music, dance, and arts festival.

The festival is a new annual New Brunswick tradition, spearheaded by the New Brunswick Cultural Center, that features a series of concerts and live performances.  Each of the festival’s events in August and September are free and open to the public.

Last year, Hub City Sounds brought acts like Winard Harper and Jeli Posse, the New Brunswick District Jazz Band, and Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro-Latin Sextet in to town.

This year, the festival kicks off with “Jazz in the Park” this Saturday August 10 3pm until 7pm, featuring performances by students from the New Brunswick High School Jazz Band as well as artists like the JT Jazz Project, Judah Tribe, and David Rush.

The following day, in the same city park, Hub City Sounds will celebrate Guelaguetza from 12pm to 6pm, featuring folk dances with the Ballet Folkclorico Mexicano de New York, Ballet Folklorico Mexicano Mazehaulli, Mexican Children Ballet Azteca, and Ballet Pochtlan.

Guelaguetza is a holiday traditionally celebrated in Oaxaca, a large city in southwestern Mexico.  Oaxaca also happens to be the city where most of New Brunswick’s Mexican immigrants have roots.

The holiday celebrates the idea of community building, sharing, and reciprocity through a dancing, colorful costumes, crafts, and gift exchange. The word Guelaguetza means “offering” in Zapotec, one of the languages spoken in Oaxaca.

There will be live music from several groups including El Rincon de la Marimba and Oaxacan food will be available as well as free tostadas.  A Oaxacan Co-op will sell clothes and folk art.

Next weekend, the family-friendly rock band StarFish will perform for free at the State Theatre on Saturday, August 17 at 5pm.

This five-piece band, featuring State Theatre’s Director of Operations Dave Hartkern on drums, invites children and their parents to dance onstage, rocking out to electric songs like “Stop, Drop and Rock and Roll,” “Air Guitar,” and “The StarFish Stomp.”

No reservations or tickets required. The bar will be open for refreshments, and sand arts and crafts will be available in the lobby.

On August 24, at the Crossroads Theatre, the all male dance company 10 Hairy Legs with other local up and coming choreographers will come together for a dance celebration entitled “Let’s Dance”

Several more free Hub City Sounds events will take place in September.

The New Brunswick Cultural Center thanked the many sponsors who made the concert series possible including Johnson & Johnson, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and New Brunswick Development Corporation.

Other partner organizations include the City of New Brunswick, Civic League of Greater New Brunswick, New Brunswick Jazz Festival, New Brunswick Jazz Project, George Street Playhouse, American Repertory Ballet, State Theatre Regional Arts Center, Crossroads Theatre Company, New Brunswick City Market, CoLAB Arts, 90.3 The Core, Don Giovanni Records, and Elijah’s Promise.
