Non-Profit Recruiting Students to Volunteer in Homeless Community

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On April 15, the first day of the weeklong Tent State University event, the co-founder and chief coordinating organizer of a local non-profit ran a workshop to inform the community about bout the organization, its roots, and what it aims to do in the city.

Homeless Empowerment Project Community Action Team (HEP/CAT) is a private non-profit focused on direct service to the homeless community, identifying and assisting homeless teens and young adults.

Now a Tradition, Tent State University Occupies Lawn For 11th Consecutive Year

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The eleventh annual protest and campout on the main lawn at Rutgers campus, known as Tent State University, came to an end two weeks ago today, following a week of educational, political, and cultural activities.

The Tent State occupation protests predate Occupy Wall Street, having started in April 2003. The protests began in response to funding cuts to Rutgers and other higher education institutions.

Under Fire, Longtime County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan Resigns

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Multiple sources have confirmed that former Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan has resigned from office, following a difficult week that saw an onslought of criticism on the eleven-year veteran.

As we reported last month, Gov. Chris Christie announced his intention to replace Kaplan as the county's top law enforcement official with Andrew Carey, a former colleague of the governors' in the US Attorney's office.

Convicted Bank Robbers Sentenced For 2009 Shootout with City Cops

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The three men convicted of robbing a bank and leading police on a dangerous chase in 2009, were sentenced to serve 20 years in prison for the attempted murder of three police officers.

Anthony Peterson, 47, James Holmes, 58, and James King, 56, all from Essex County, pleaded guilty last month to one count of armed robbery, and three counts of attempted murder for firing at the police officers.

Spencer Will Preside Over Board of “Ed” For Another Year

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Edward Spencer, a longtime city employee and political figure, was chosen by his fellow board of education members to serve as the board president for the second consecutive year.

The board unanimously voted to keep Spencer in the leadership role, and Pat Sadowski as Vice President, at their annual re-organization meeting Tuesday night at New Brunswick High School.
