Who is New County Prosecutor Andrew Carey?

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Andrew Carey of New Providence is now entering his third week as Acting Middlesex County Prosecutor, but not much is known about the new appointee.

Jim O'Neill, longtime spokesman for the prosecutor's office confirmed that his new boss has not yet re-located to Middlesex County.  O'Neill said Carey's move is still in the works, but declined to say which municipality the prosecutor intends to move to.

Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign Pushes for Rutgers to Stop Investing in Oil & Gas Companies

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Students and Rutgers community members working to get the school to withdraw any financial stake it has in oil and gas companies.

The Rutgers Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign describes itself as a “coalition of Rutgers community members working to push the Rutgers Governing Boards into divesting the University’s endowment from the fossil fuel industry.”

Natural Disasters Serve as Focus of Planning Conference in New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Urban planners from across New Jersey gathered in the New Brunswick Hyatt Regency Hotel for the American Planning Association's (APA's) annual conference on February 1.

Their conference was delayed several months due to Hurricane Sandy, which struck less than a week before the original date in November.  When the conference returned, disaster preparation and the recent hurricane dominated the speeches and discussions.

North Brunswick Police Car Crashes Into Tree After Being Struck By Another Vehicle

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A North Brunswick police cruiser evidently crashed into a tree at the corner of Livingston Avenue and Hale Street earlier this evening, injuring the officer behind the wheel and another individual.

It's not immediately clear what precipitated the the crash that occurred shortly after 7:30pm, but the accident appears to have involved at least two vehicles.

Bounty Doubled on Escaped Convict Whose Trial Was Held in New Brunswick 35 Years Ago

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On the 40th anniversary of a gunfight that killed a New Jersey State Trooper in East Brunswick, the FBI announced that the woman convicted in the case is now the first woman to be placed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List.

Authorities also announced that the bounty for information leading to Assata Shakur's capture has been doubled to $2 million, the highest bounty on any individual in New Jersey's history.

Should New Brunswick Ban Smoking in City Parks?

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The City Council's five members are poised to adopt an ordinance that would to ban smoking in all city parks and other city property.

A final vote scheduled for tomorrow will be preceeded by a public hearing where the council will hear questions and comments on the ordinance from anyone.

The hearing will take place at the council's regular meeting, held on the top floor of City Hall at 6:30pm.

Council President Rebecca Escobar, herself a smoker, has said publicly that she supports the law.

Elijah’s Promise Takes Different Approach to Homelessness

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A new initiative of the city's only soup kitchen, Elijah’s Promise, takes a different approach to helping the area's homeless population by directly finding and assisting those on the streets with shelter, medical care, and social services.

A joint effort of the kitchen and the University of Medicine & Dentistry of NJ (UMDNJ), the Homeless Empowerment Action Recovery Team (HEART) is a mobile homeless outreach program that travels throughout Middlesex County in search for homeless individuals in need of help.
