NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Earlier today, the Middlesex County Prosecutor announced the identity of a man shot yesterday afternoon by city police and the charges against the suspect.
Authorities say that 26-year old male Akeem Williams was walking down Sanford Street past the Anesh Emethe Memorial Temple at 222 Livingston Avenue, when he fired the handgun he was carrying and was gunned down by city police near the interesection of the two streets.
As we reported yesterday, local police were responding to multiple reports of a man walking around the area with a handgun.
About an hour later, another man was arrested for carrying a handgun and a knife roughly eight blocks away, according to a report on New Brunswick’s Patch.com
Williams, a North Brunswick resident, is charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was also charged with a count of certain persons not to have weapons due to a previous offense.
As reported in county prosecutor’s press release, Williams was shot by several police officers after firing the small handgun he was holding on the corner of Livingston Ave and Sanford Street around 12:30pm.
Williams was immediately rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. Â He has prisoner status at the hospital and his bail has been set for $150,000.
