NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A “drug deal gone bad” scenario unfolded Monday night inside a commercial building on Bayard Street that left two suspects at large and one man shot, according to city police.

The unidentified 22-year-old victim was shot in the leg shortly after 8 p.m.

At 8:09 p.m., a police unit was dispatched in response to the shooting.  Within minutes, all available units were on their way to the 93-year-old office building.

There, officers found a .40 caliber round on the floor and a man with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police radio transmissions.

Another person at the scene, likely the same person who called police, was arrested after being questioned.

A 20-year old man from Highland Park was charged with possession of marijuana and possession with the intent to distribute.

The shooting took place in a rented office space on the fourth floor, which officers referred to as a recording studio.  A board in the lobby of the building lists the tenant as DML Studio.

As backup officers arrived on the scene, they were ordered to stay in the building’s lobby until a ballistics shield and rifle arrived.

“All you guys stand by where you’re at, hold that down,” an officer instructed.  “Wait for the shield and the rifle.  Don’t go further up.”

An investigation determined the shooting was the result of a botched drug deal between two suspects and the man from Highland Park.

The two suspected shooters were described on the transmissions as black males, one of whom was wearing a black vest.  They fled the scene in unknown directions, according to police.

New Brunswick Police Captain J.T. Miller declined to give any details about the suspects at Wednesday evening’s City Council meeting.

The victim’s role in the shooting is still being withheld.  He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital where his injuries were considered not life-threatening.

The New Brunswick Police Department have asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact Det. Harry Lemmerling at 732-745-5217.
