FAYETTEVILLE, AK—For the first time in nearly three years, the Associated Press poll of sportswriters has ranked Rutgers University’s football team among the top 25 in the nation.
Coming in at #23, the Knights boast a 4-0 record in their first season since longtime head coach Greg Schiano surprisingly left the team for a job coaching professional football earlier this year.
Under the tutelage of new coach Kyle Flood, the Knights have defeated Tulane University, Howard University, the University of South Florida, and most recently Arkansas University. Â Their only home game has been against Howard, all the other victories came on the road.
The team returns to Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway Saturday October 6 to face Big East rival UConn.
The first college football game ever played was in New Brunswick in 1869, when Rutgers defeated Princeton University.
Since the AP began ranking teams in 1934, the Knights have only been nationally ranked during five previous seasons, according to the Star-Ledger.
Three of those seasons were under the tenure of departed coach Greg Schiano.
