NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) is calling for volunteers and bicycling enthusiasts to cycle for their 8th Annual “Century for the Cure” ride.
The city-based CINJ holds this event with one goal in mind: to find a cure for cancer. Registration is now open for this year’s September 8 ride.
The race will start at at Camp Riverbend in Warren Township and offer a variety of courses trailing through the scenic back roads of central New Jersey.
The event will feature a 100-mile trail, hence the name “century.” Additionally, participants can choose to ride an 80-mile trail, 40-mile trail, or even a “virtual” trails, which will allow non-riders to fundraise and support the cause without physically participating in the ride, the release further stated.
Century for the Cure was first concieved in 2005 by Warren Township resident Scott Glickman, after he was successfully treated at CINJ for stage four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Since the first ride, the dedication and efforts of all participants have raised in total of $825,000 to benefit the cause.
“The efforts of the community over the past seven years have produced numerous opportunities to advance in the fight against cancer,” Glickman said.
“All participants, cycling or not, have a significant impact in making a difference in research, projects, and therapies at CINJ and we are all so proud and grateful for their efforts.” said Glickman.
A portion of the funds raised this year will go towards the work of Dr. Roger Strair. Strair is the chief of CINJ’s Hematologic Malignancies/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Program and a professor of medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Stair was also Glickman’s oncologist during his treatment at CINJ.
Dr. Strair stated that, “Scott’s dedication and energy in Century for the Cure each year continues to support tremendous advancements in research at CINJ. His commitment to the fight against cancer makes fewer battles ‘unwinnable’ each year”.
This year’s event is sponsored by Overton Custom Brokers, Benefit Sources and Solutions, Genentech, JMK Auto Sales, and the Beth J. Rappoport Memorial Fund.
