NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Monday afternoon, James Coleman, 44, led police officers from North Brunswick and New Brunswick on a twenty minute chase through parts of both towns.
The pursuit ended when Coleman, who hails from North Brunswick, crashed into a police cruiser and then into a utility pole on Powers Street in New Brunswick.
“He was in and out of an apartment complex. On highways and side streets. A number of people lives were put in danger,” New Brunswick Sgt. Mark Pappas told NJ.com.
According to the authorities, Coleman was pulled over on Jersey Avenue by a North Brunswick police officer for driving a vehicle that was reported stolen earlier that afternoon. Coleman allegedly sped away from the officers igniting the chase.
The vehicle, a late model Honda Accord, was stolen from the corner of Suydam Street and Thrrop Avenue approximately 2 pm.
A half-hour later, police were chasing the vehicle.
The police were in pursuit of Coleman for nearly twenty minutes as he navigated Route 1 and George Street in downtown New Brunswick.
“He went into New Brunswick, back to North Brunswick, back to New Brunswick, back to North Brunswick and back to New Brunswick,” Pappas said.
At least one New Brunswick police car was rammed during the chase, which ended when the stolen vehicle crashed into a utility pole on Powers Street between Remsen and Lee avenues, according to the report.
